TECHNICAL AREA
Project: Orographic effects and effects of trails In Sotavento Wind Farm

PROJECT/RECORD:

Sotavento Wind Farm consist of 24 different wind turbines placed on a moderately complex orographic lie. It is divided into five different technologies, a total of nine different types of wind turbines.

The Wind Farm carries out the task of valuating each turbine´s performance and facilitates a suitable mean for investigation on possible innovations in the development of wind turbines.

Because of the effect of the trails, not all the machines receive a wind with the same characteristics. Consequently, it is necessary the fixing of the influential wind in each turbine, because the data supplied by the anemometer of the engine casing contains disturbances because of the cowling and its accelerating effects.

A study, GARRAD HASSAM, had been carried out before the construction of the farm taking into account the existent wind data.

PROJECT/OBJECTIVES:

The preparation of a computer model which determines, in real time, the influencial wind affecting each wind turbine, taking into account trail and orographic effects in order to know the real wind received by every wind turbine of the farm.

Discriminating the differencies that exist between influential wind and the wind produced by the turbines in each direction and speed.

Correlating the characteristics of the effective influential wind in each machine, with the wind that would be measuring by one or more anemometers (placed at two meteorological towers), suitably located in the farm.
This project is carried out in collaboration with the Laboratory of Mechanics of currents (Energetic Engineering Department) and Mechanics of currents of the Higher Technical School of Industrial Engineers ( Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. UPM)

Programs for the valuation of orographic effects:

  • WASP. Commercial program of wide spreading, developed by RISO.
  • UPM. Own program for moderately complex Land. It is a program based on the model of Jackson and Hunt. Its applicability limits are similar to WASP, and it is possible that its foundation was alike, although it has the advantage of being an open program.
  • FLUENT. It is a program of general resolution of probems of mechanical-currents. It should be applied to the configuration of the farm in the case of critical directions of wind. It would be used with an estationary character and with a lock of k-ε type in order to shape the turbulence. It can be applied to complex orographic configurations, with current-slide and re-circulations.

Programs for the valuation of the effect of trails:

  • UPMPARK. It is a program developed at the UPM Laboratory in which they could be calculated the conditions of current: it resolves the general equation of the mechanics of currents with a k-ε lock in order to shape the turbulence. It uses the approximation of parabolic current. The land is supposed to be flat and through an suitable algorithm they are overstriked the effects of the land calculated with any other program. This program has been widely validated by the comparison with real turbines and with experiments in wind tunel.
  • PARK. It is a program developed by RISO that is incorporated to WASP. Its levels of preparation and validation are very inferior than that of UPMPARK, but they can be used to contrast results.

PROJECT/METHODOLOGY:

The different phases developed along the project are:

  1. Sotavento facilitates to the UPM: digitalized topography, historical wind data and final report Garrad Hassan.
  2. The Laboratory of Mechanics of currents of the ETSII of the UPM carries out a report and/or critic valuation of the final report Garrad Hassan.
  3. Sotavento offers to the UPM six months of wind from the farm´s stations and power-anemometry of wind turbines.
  4. The Laboratory of Mechanichs of Currents of the UPM´S ETSII, carries out a first approximation to the discrimination of the influential wind in the 24 positions against the wind registers of the last six months.
  5. The Laboratory of Mechanichs of Currents of the UPM´S ETSII, develops the report of influential wind and supplies a program that offers 24 wind values to their use in Sotavento´s applications.

PROJECT/COLLABORATORS:

The project has been out by the "Fundation para el Fomento Industrial ", in collaboration of the Energetic Engineering Department and Mechanichs of Currents of the Higher Technical School of Industrial Engineers of the Politechnical University of Madrid (UPM).

Mr. Antonio Crespo Martínez has been the supervisor of the researching equipment.

PROJECT/PRESENT SITUATION:

The project is finished nowadays.
