Sotavento receives to the visitor number 100,000.
The visitor number 100.000, from the beginning of the Educational - Divulgative Plan in the year 2002, was the pupil of 3 º of ESO (obligatory education) of the CPI Monte Caxado of As Pontes, Antonio Gómez Rodríguez. To celebrate it, staff for the Foundation delivered him diverse didactic material.

Sotavento and the Vertical Partner company sign an agreement of collaboration for the formation and training of technical specializing personnel.
The formative activities, which carry out in the facilities of the Experimental Wind Farm Sotavento, centre on works on height by means of suspension with ropes and are destined for the repair, inspection and cleanliness of spades and towers.

The cleanliness of spades is a maintenance that must be realized from time to time to optimize the performance of the wind turbines. The innovation of these actions centres on the employment of equipments that allow the descent from the top of the towers instead of using derricks.

Given the situation of Galicia as for its wind potential, the actions directed to facilitate and optimize the maintenances of the wind turbines of more than 120 Galician wind farms, receive an enormous importance. Let's remember that Galicia is a worldwide wind power counting with near 3,000 MW of installed power and with approximately 4,000 wind turbines.

Besides the educational and investigative activities, Sotavento also is a protagonist of this type of formative activities directed to the technical specialization and to the optimization of the utilization of the wind resource.

The Foundation Sotavento Galicia and LACTALIS (President) sign an agreement to promote the knowledge and possibilities of the solar power.
To such an effect, the manager of the Foundation, Jose Núñez and Lactalis, signed an agreement by which free tasting in Sotavento using ecological milk prepared with solar technology.

This activity will be started immediately and will spread throughout all the year round 2008.

According to the Foundation Terra, the solar kitchens "offer a real alternative to 1,000 millions of m3 of fuelwood that they are in use in the world for cooking, provoking climatic alterations due to the deforestation and the desertification of wide zones of the third world ".

It was presented in As Pontes the disc "Música do vento" engraving with sounds of the wind turbines of Sotavento.
In the musical unique experience celebrated in the facilities of Sotavento one year ago, they presented in novelty the musical pieces composed by Ignacio Sanz using the sounds of the wind turbines of the park. Recently, the musician has been rewarded by the Autonomous Government of Galicia with the third prize of musical excellence that implies the edition of the pieces on a disc that goes for title "Music do vento".

The Sotavento Galicia Foundation started its exposition activities for 2007 with the esposition “Kites with history”.
The wind has been, throughout human history, an energetic and playful source; it helped to do domestic jobs and travelled with those who appealed to the God Aeolus to sail the seas, thus making the civilization progress.

There have been a lot of uses of wind. Our own progress made uses and technology improve to adapt to new needs. The flight of kites is perhaps one of least known uses of wind, nevertheless it helped to progress a lot in science. Conscious of this importance, the exposition “Kites with History”, shown by the Sotavento Galicia Foundation and supported by Caixanova, tries to show us this exciting world and to help us to better understand the scientific basis of certain phenomena related to wind.

This exposition is composed of twelve reproductions of kites which played an important role in history due to their different uses, fundamentally scientific ones.

The show does not pretend to be a rigorous and scientific classification of the history of kites, but its aim is to show a historical period in which humans used these flying devices for different purposes related to publicity, aerial photography, war, scientific experiments and the idea of flying.

A more than four-metre-breadth reproduction of a kite which was used as an anti-aircraft barrage in the Second World War presides the exposition as well as the dome of the Formative Room in Sotavento.

We will learn about concepts as attack angle, flight edge, sustenance, aerodynamics, etc. by means of something we know as a toy and which represents the basis of the working of most devices that have to do with wind, aerodynamics and the pretension of humanity to conquer the sky.

Information boards with features and curiosities of every kite, as well as a publication, complete the exposition that can be visited freely at the Experimental Wind Farm Sotavento at weekends from 11:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 18:00.

The solar firm PST installs in Sotavento its new thermodynamic solar panels
Solar PST, a firm situated in A Coruña, has installed in Sotavento its thermodynamic solar panels. This new technology combines the principles of heat pump with solar energy in order to produce hot water.

The functioning, according to the firm, is created by the circulating of a fluid, able to extract the heat from the environment and transmit it to water by using solar radiation as well as air and rain temperature, according to the principles of the French physician Carnot.

A fluid enters the solar panels in a liquid form at -5/-15ºC. This fluid is a refrigerant. The panels capture solar radiation during sun hours, absorb the superior ambient temperature during the whole day and the one from rain when it rains. This variation of temperature makes the fluid gasify, being sent to a thermodynamic block.

At this point, the compressor of the block, by pressure, elevates the fluid’s temperature to 110/120ºC, which is transmitted to the water circuit by a temperature exchanger.

The equipment implemented in Sotavento shows, in a real way, the necessary installation for the consumption of hot water of a 5-person-family and is formed by an only panel of 8kg, connected to a 300 litre tank. It was installed at the end of June and can be visited and proved from Monday to Sunday, within the visit hours of the wind farm, which you can find in this website. This technology can also be used to heat houses and pools.

A new system to carry out exterior maintenance jobs in aerogenerators is being tested at Sotavento
During the program for the implantation of work procedures that improve safety conditions of its staff, the aerogenerator producer Vestas Eólica S.A. has tested a nes crane-lorry supplied with the latest technology for jobs in heights.

This new kind of platforms allows the working in aerogenerators at a maximum height of 70 metres, improving considerably the safety of the different maintenance jobs that are necessary for a good working of the machines. Furthermore, due to their exclusive design for this type of performances, they facilitate the jobs and increase their working possibilities.

Vestas Eólica S.A. has chosen the Sotavento Experimental Windfarm as the perfect place to show the efficiency of this system because there are aerogenerators of different technologies and heights. The event, which took place on December 16th, was attended by producers as well as maintenance staff of the main firms of this sector in Galicia.
