Monitoring and Communications

Sotavento Wind Farm is connected to the outside world via redundant broadband data networks, ensuring constant communication with the facility:

  • Standard ADSL lines (connect to the park via fiber optic cable)
  • ADSL WIFI line (reaches the park via radio link)

Within the park, there are several sub-networks that enable the efficient execution of various tasks and projects.

The medium used for information transport between the interior and exterior of the park is single-mode and multi-mode fiber optic cable, with structured cabling used exclusively for equipment connections.

The main existing sub-networks are:

  1. Wind Turbine Network (Production)
This communication network has been implemented for a parallel analysis of the data provided by the wind turbine SCADAs. It is a fiber optic sub-network (with Token Ring topology) that connects all wind turbines to the control building.
  2. Operations Network
Sub-network composed of all equipment dedicated to technical operations:

    • Network segments and SCADA equipment for wind turbines and substation
    • Network segments and equipment for anemometric towers
    • Network segments and equipment related to specific experimental projects
  3. Dissemination Network
Composed of all equipment dedicated to educational and outreach activities:

    • Educator workstations
    • Interactive information-dissemination points
  4. Server Network
Within the server sub-network, located in the rack room of the park’s control building, all information servers that provide different services to all other sub-networks are centralized. This is a DMZ network (especially protected).
    The servers it contains are:

    • File server (Active Directory)
    • Database server (SQL Server)
    • WEB server (Apache, and Tomcat)
    • Real Time server (SCADA real-time data)
    • Application Servers (Projects, installations, etc.)
    • Backup server (NAS)
  5. Auxiliary Systems Network
A network containing auxiliary, common-use equipment shared by the other sub-networks (printers, scanners, projection screens, etc.). All sub-networks are protected by a comprehensive firewall system. All main equipment has an uninterruptible power supply (UPS).

The parameters of the Sotavento Wind Farm’s wind installations are stored in a database and integrated into a download application. This application allows organizations, companies, or universities with which Sotavento maintains collaboration agreements to access the necessary data for project development.
